The Center for Research on Ingredient Safety (CRIS) Director of Science Communication will oversee all aspects of the Center’s science communications program, including publications, blogs, website, social media and media relations. The academic specialist will work with the CRIS Director, faculty and staff in developing strategies to communicate the state-of-the-science on ingredient safety to the public for the Center, and will coordinate the implementation of these plans.
The successful candidate will work with the CRIS Director to strategize and plan the transition of CRIS into a highly visible academic Center focused on food, personal care and household products. This position will be responsible for communicating the science of ingredient safety in accessible and relevant ways to a broad public audience. It will also entail working with journalists and others to ensure effective, science-based communication around issues associated with ingredient safety. In addition, this position will be responsible for communicating the services and mission of CRIS to internal and external stakeholders and partners.

A Master’s Degree in science, journalism, English, communications or related program; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in science communication, a public relations office, or in journalism or policy, including writing and editing a variety of formats such as news releases, articles, and Web pages; experience promoting and communicating scientific information for the lay audience; experience with stakeholder engagement, an understanding of academic organizations and procedures; experience creating internal staff communications; general knowledge of international media industry and new media trends; application and demonstration of strong news judgment, research, and interviewing skills.
Candidate must understand program delivery, evaluation and how communication activities support and advance the academic programs of CRIS. Candidate must understand how government agencies and foundations interact with CRIS and respect their operational guidelines and procedures related to communication.
Proven ability to work across scientific disciplines and with faculty. Experience in public speaking; publishing in peer-reviewed journals and established relationships with media outlets and within the scientific community.
