The MSU College of Human Medicine seeks a scientist with significant experience in high resolution/high sensitive mass spectrometry-based proteomics, protein chemistry, biochemical techniques, statistical analysis and laboratory management to help establish and manage the day-to-day research activities of the Proteomics Core in the new, state-of-the-art Grand Rapids Research Center. This appointment is in the faculty and academic staff system at the rank of Academic Specialist-Outreach. The specialist will support the research mission of the college by working collaboratively with researchers in project coordination, data collection, data analysis/reporting, sample improvement and validation. Other responsibilities will include duties related to the operations and management of fee-for-service facilities including budget development and revenue projections. Equipped with excellent communications skills in addition to technical expertise, the successful candidate will also develop and present scientific talks to external customers to promote services and resources available at the Core.
MS or Doctorate
The candidate must have an MS or PhD (PhD preferred) in areas of biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, system biology or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three years of experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics is required. The candidate must have a research track record in the use of mass spectrometry for protein identification, posttranslational modification and/or protein quantification, as demonstrated in published peer-reviewed articles as first or senior author. Additionally, the successful candidate will be able to:
1) conduct high quality and reproducible sample preparation for tandem mass spectrometry analysis (MudPIT), using established protocols and optimizing methods depending of the application
2) operate high resolution and high sensitive mass spectrometer instruments, such as Q-Exactive HF instruments
3) perform different protein chromatography methods
4) perform biomass analysis and top-down proteomics
5) conduct mass spectrometry data processing and statistical analysis
6) interpret LC-MS data and prepare reports
7) develop methods, troubleshoot and provide solutions to issues as they arise
8) Maintain record of samples, quality control and instrument status
9) Perform quality control tests, tuning, calibration of mass spectrometer, trouble shooting technical issues, and routine instrument maintenance
Preference will be given to candidates who also have experience with: quantitative analysis using mass spectrometry-based proteomics; techniques used for validation of LC-MS data such as western blotting, ELISA, immunoprecipitation; computational biology or statistics; prior biomedical research experience in projects related to biomarker identification, metabolomics and/or lipidomics; and laboratory management.
