Michigan State University is hiring a Fixed Term position at the Assistant Professor level with pay commensurate with experience to co-teach with Associate Professor Teresa Dunn on Visual Art in Italy, a studio based summer education abroad program taking place in the month of June. Visual Art in Italy is an experience in which 16-20 students travel to study drawing and painting in the city streets and landscapes of Venice, Italy with additional trips to Florence and Padua. Students also study a wide range of historical and contemporary art on site, developing an extensive journal of sketches, writings, and collages in response to artistic, scholarly, and cultural experiences and lecture content. Overall program goals are to learn painting and drawing from beginning to advanced levels and through a studio lens to understand past and present art and its relationship to the time and place for which the work was made.
Position is planned to recur every Summer Semester.
The qualified applicant will possess an MFA in studio art with a concentration in Painting before the start of June 2019. The applicant should possess very strong skills in observational painting and drawings and be very familiar with the art of the Renaissance and Baroque in Venice, Florence, and Padua, Italy. The candidate must be familiar navigating in these cities and be comfortable with living and working abroad. The ideal candidate will have had their own experience studying abroad. No Italian language knowledge is required. The successful candidate should have previous teaching experience in using traditional studio practice, preferably teaching observational drawing. Visual Art in Italy is taught every two years to coincide with the Venice Biennale.
