The College of Music at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Music Education beginning Fall 2019. The Music Education Area at Michigan State University is committed to encouraging and expanding scholarship and teaching practice in new and innovative areas of music education as well as to developing the practical applications of that scholarship. We seek a creative, dynamic colleague with successful teaching expertise, a scholarly agenda that is important and innovative, and potential for leadership in our profession.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in elementary general and early childhood music undergraduate and graduate courses related to the candidate’s background and scholarly interests. Preference for a candidate with elementary general music background. Areas of interest may include but are not limited to:
· Early childhood and elementary general music methods that may include Gordon Music Learning Theory, Orff Schulwerk, the Kodály method, Dalcroze Eurhythmics
· Quantitative research
· Psychology and music education
· Urban music education
· Vernacular musics/music making
· Technological applications in music education
In addition, the candidate will contribute to the advising of master’s and doctoral students, placement and supervision of music student teachers, collaboration with the early childhood music program at the Community Music Schools, and the work of the New Directions Institute (https://www.newdirectionsmsu.org). Additional duties include committee service, recruiting activities, continuing connections between music education and general education, grant writing, and participation in the ongoing work of the music education area and the college.
Doctorate -Music Education
Earned doctorate in music education (or equivalent) by August 15, 2019; three or more years of successful K-12 music teaching as well as college teaching experience; and an emerging or established record of scholarship, including publications, conference presentations, and other appropriate activity.
