Within VUMC Human Resources, the Sr. Accounting Clerk performs accounting and clerical functions in selecting and applying guidelines and policy, with minimal guidance. This position is responsible for processing payments to vendors, preparing journal entries and reconciliations.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Review vendor invoices and payroll liabilities for accuracy and request approval/ payment. Knowledge and adherence of all deadlines for HR payments and liabilities such as payroll taxes, garnishments, employee benefits, Union Dues, 3rd party payroll deductions etc.
Create, format and verify electronic files to be submitted for payment processing.
Complete reconciliations between employee transactions, vendor files, VUMC payroll records and vendor payments. Work with respective party to resolve any outstanding issues in a timely manner.
Coordinate with treasury and appropriate parties to complete cash or check deposits as needed.
Understand payroll tax implications for employee benefits based upon IRS regulations. Work closely with payroll team to ensure that benefits are accurately reported correctly for employee tax purposes.
Maintain files containing all supporting documentation. Scanning documents into electronic repository.
High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience) and 4 years relevant experience
Knowledge of general financial accounting practices and principles.
Technically proficient in Microsoft Excel at an intermediate or advance level.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
Ability to work independently within defined and undefined scenarios.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task and deal with high volume of tasks while meeting required deadlines.
Payroll and payroll tax knowledge preferred.
ACCOUNTING REPORTING - Knowledge of the general financial accounting practices and principles. Able to analyze and interpret financial statements as well as develop reports and present them in a comprehensive and intelligent manner.
PROBLEM SOLVING Uses critical thinking and process improvement i.e. coaches and mentors development of problem statement, describes current state, identifies root causes, creates future state, coaches and mentors development of solutions and action plans with a sustainability plan. Applies appropriate tools to address issues.

Able to interpret and explain rules and regulations that are ambiguous or unclear. Directs others in interpreting rules and regulations on the job and trains others in them.
DATA ENTRY - The ability to transcribe information from the original source into an electronic system according to written and verbal instructions efficiently and accurately.
