The Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences (GEO) and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) at Michigan State University invite applications for a fixed term research faculty in the field of hydrology and climate science at the Assistant Professor level. The position is jointly funded by grants from the two departments with an initial 3-year term. The successful candidate will work with researchers in both departments on different but related research projects. In the GEO Department, the candidate will work with Prof. Lifeng Luo on a research project to create a better system for predicting droughts in the U.S. NOAA Research’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions and Projections (MAPP) Program is supporting this effort through a competitive grant. The MSU research team will collaborate with researchers at NOAA’s National Weather Service to develop a Land Information System (LIS)-based modeling system to produce automated probabilistic and categorical drought prediction at subseasonal to seasonal time scales. In the EES department, the candidate will work on several projects(NIFA, NOAA, and NSF) examining the influence of human activities such as irrigation on climate.
The candidate needs to have completed a PhD in atmospheric science, hydrology, climate sciences or related disciplines.
The candidate needs to have a strong programming skills with programming languages such as FORTRAN, python and Bash, to process and analyze large datasets in the UNIX/Linux platform.
The candidate needs to have a good knowledge and extensive experience working with numerical models, including land surface models or hydrological models (e.g., Noah, VIC, WRF-hydro, etc.) and regional climate models (e.g., WRF).
The candidate needs to have a strong oral communication skill as well as writing skills to be able to develop reports and research articles independently.
A good publication record in international journals is a clear advantage.
Experience working in the High Performance Computer (HPC) environment and parallel computing.
