The Assistant Professor of Graphic Design is responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in Graphic Design as well as courses for non-majors, maintaining an active program of scholarship, providing service as required, and engagement in professional development.
Siena Heights University is a private, Catholic, coeducational institution, sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, located in Adrian, Michigan. The University has an enrollment of approximately 1,100 students on the main campus. The Art Department, Studio Angelico, is a NASAD accredited program with 6 full-time faculty and about 70 majors (approximately half of which are Graphic Design majors). The program offers instruction in Ceramics & Sculpture, Graphic Design, Art History, Painting & Drawing, Photography & Video, and Printmaking & Book Arts with BFA degrees offered in Studio Art and Graphic Design. In addition, the Art Department is home to Klemm Gallery, which hosts exhibitions by a wide range of contemporary artists from across the country.
The Art Department at Siena Heights is a highly collaborative work environment. Faculty work together in developing learning outcomes and curriculum that meet University and NASAD guidelines, assessing students, and participate with recruitment efforts. Philosophically, the faculty encourages its students to take a contemporary, multidisciplinary approach to their work, becoming proficient in additional art media outside their primary focus. This allows students the space to combine any materials and processes in the development of a body of work that reflects their focus, yet is uniquely their own.
The Assistant Professor of Graphic Design is responsible for teaching 9 credit hours per semester to include introductory through advanced level classes in graphic design and in accordance with relevant academic policies. This position is responsible for updating the Graphic Design curriculum to one that is contemporary/experimental in its approach while following NASAD BFA guidelines, supports the Art Department’s philosophy, its learning outcomes, and the mission of the University. Serves as an academic advisor for graphic design students and assist the art department in recruitment and retention efforts. Serve as an academic and professional mentor as well as senior project advisor to Graphic Design majors. Provides feedback and grades to students on a timely basis. Meets deadlines set by the Registrar’s office for grading, including midterms and finals. Participates in learning outcomes assessments and faculty critiques. Ability to design dynamic curriculum, innovative projects and teach professional design practices and workflow from idea generation, through the iterative process, to finished product. Extensive experience working with the Adobe Creative Suite on a Mac platform. Ability to help students incorporate various fine arts practices as well as other academic areas into graphic design. Ability to help students find their unique aesthetic and give voice to their personal interests. Prepare students to be competitive in the field of design or in applying to graduate programs. Assist students in professional development through organizations such as AIGA or UCDA as well as finding internships. Place an emphasis on helping students become critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. Attends to professional development and scholarly/artistic activity. Participates in department, division and faculty meetings, as well as committees, convocations, commencement activities, and faculty workshops. Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department and division chairs, and the dean.
MFA in Graphic Design, preferred two years teaching experience and/or professional experience in graphic design. Maintain a high degree of excellence in teaching and curriculum development while balancing personal research, professional development and/or an active exhibition record.
