A Research Associate, postdoctoral, position is immediately available in the group of Professor John R. Dorgan in the department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University.
The selected researcher will work to develop novel molecular simulation techniques for polymers. Building on extensive existing codes, on-lattice simulation methods incorporating polydispersity and chain branching will be developed. Rheological properties for melts and solutions are available from the powerful new algorithms at computation costs that are orders of magnitude lower than molecular dynamcis (MD) methods. Comparative work with MD will be conducted. The successful candidate will have a strong background in programming using the primary low-level scientific languages (FORTRAN, C, C++) across a variety of platforms. Graduate level expertise in statistical mechanics is expected. The project involves collaboration with a major chemical enterprise and a National Laboratory and is supported by MSU’s state-of-the-art High Performance Computing Center within the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (https://icer.msu.edu/). The position is initially for one year, renewable annually based on performance and availability of funding.
Requires a doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a closely related field. Applicants must have defended their PhD by the time of employment.
Prior publication record in molecular simulation techniques; extensive low-level language programming experience.
