Essential Functions: The Director, Levin Center at Wayne Law is responsible for providing strategic, operational and financial leadership to the Levin Center at Wayne Law (Center). Develops, implement and oversees Center programs and activities that advance in-depth, fact-based, bi-partisan oversight of public and private sector activities.Provides strategic vision and leadership to ensure the Center is a nationally recognized center for legislative excellence through the promotion of bi-partisan, fact-based oversight and civil discourse on matters of public policy. Works with, and maintains positive relationships with, the leadership of Wayne State University, Wayne State University Law School, the Center's Washington, D.C. office, the Center's Faculty Committee, the Center's external Advisory Board, and Senator Carl Levin to meet the Center's goals, as outlined in its Strategic Plan.Provides leadership to staff; cultivates a strong, team-oriented culture of accountability; oversees staff hiring and performance management, including coaching, counseling, mentoring, training, development, and planning for future staffing needs. Ensures compliance with confidentiality and data usage policies.Manages the Levin Center annual budget and maintains transparency of the Center's income and expenses for Wayne State University, Wayne State University Law School, the Center's Faculty Committee, and the Center's external Advisory Board.Develops short-term and long-term revenue and expense projections.Approves expenditures and monitors transactions for compliance with Wayne State University policies and procedures.Grows the Center both programmatically and financially. Oversees fundraising activities, serving as a representative for the Center and leading efforts, in coordination with Wayne State University and Wayne State University Law School development officers, to raise endowment and programming funds for the Center. Establishes relationships and interacts with donors, the Center's Faculty Committee and the Center's external Advisory Board, and legislative leaders.Implement best practices that allow the Center's continuing growth, focusing on increasing revenue and financial stability. Maintains and expands foundation relations to increase the Center's operating funds.Identifies and implements new opportunities for promoting, supporting, and participating in scholarship on oversight and public affairs, including faculty scholarship, symposia, and research projects related to the Levin Center's mission. Develops courses for Wayne State University Law School related to the Center's mission (e.g., legislative oversight, legislation, lobbying, public policy, conflict resolution, and related subjects); teach one or more such courses per academic year at Wayne State University Law School, subject to the Law School's policies and practices relating to course scheduling and faculty teaching assignments.
Qualifications: Juris Doctorate Required.Faculty or high-level administrative experience in an academic or functionally equivalent position. Direct experience in working in a legislative office, government agency, or as part of a legislative oversight team. Experience in managing projects and/or social programs. Experience in budgeting and fiscal management.Experience with planning, developing, and implementing fundraising strategies. Familiarity with policies and procedures for comprehensive campaigns.Problem solver with good judgment, high ethical standards, and common sense.Collaborative, inclusive, and able to motivate others. Ability to manage and grow an efficient and effective organization required. Clear and strategic thinker with the ability to communicate simply and clearly. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills including strong public speaking ability. Capable of keeping multiple parties informed of Center's decision making and activities.Knowledge of the legislative process and role of oversight strongly preferred. Ability to develop and execute short and long term strategies and goals. Demonstrated capabilities managing longer-term projects, multiple priorities and timelines to meet organizational objectives. Understanding of mission and strategic objectives of Wayne State University and Wayne State University Law School to ensure solution alignment. Comfortable and flexible with changing priorities, high levels of ambiguity and non-routine issues; comfortable in actively seeking out input and partnering with individuals and groups of all levels.Familiarity with budget process and ability to prepare standard financial statements, reports and analysis.Ability to plan, develop, and implement, fundraising strategies. Familiarity with policies and procedures for comprehensive campaigns.Able to work evening and weekend hours. Travel up to 20% required.
