Essential Functions: The Wayne State University School of Medicine seeks applications and nominations for a distinguished physician leader to fill the position of chairperson for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Wayne State University. This individual will be a dynamic, innovative, passionate and experienced physician leader with a proven track record of individual scholarship and patient outcomes research, collaborative clinical leadership and program development. They must embody educational excellence with a solid focus on faculty recruitment and community engagement, and will be an entrepreneurial leader with the business skills required to expand the practice beyond metropolitan Detroit. Essential Functions (Job Duties)As Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is expected to:Work with the Dean to develop and implement short-term action plans and long-term strategic plans for the department that are aligned with the needs and goals of the School of Medicine. Recruit, select, and retain excellent faculty that have the skill sets for both personal success and to be a valuable asset to the Department and SOM. Maintain an active role in faculty appointment, renewals and provide oversight of the factors for promotion and/or tenure, including the completion of meaningful annual performance reviews for each faculty member, as appropriate, within the department. Assure mentoring for junior faculty, and when needed, for mid-career and senior faculty.Work within the confines of financial support for the Department to achieve budgeted goals and maintain a positive financial condition. Further expand and fortify the department's research strength, focus on research productivity of the existing faculty as measured by grant submissions and grant awards and seek to recruit research-intensive faculty in conjunction with right sizing the faculty complement achieving an improved return on investment. Work with the Vice Dean of Research to set goals to increase external research proposals and the hiring of physician scientists. Provide sufficient oversight, nurturance and protection to the departmental physician scientists to enable their research careers to flourish. Enhance the national status of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Development and implementation of an administrative structure that will foster the professional and scholarly growth of the Department in a multi-hospital academic setting. Establish mechanisms that ensure robust participation of the faculty in the academic and clinical dealings of the Department. Work with the affiliated hospital partners to accomplish the following: implement the academic and staffing plans of the Department; provide local supervision for the educational and research components of the discipline.Oversee the instruction of PM&R to medical students at all appropriate participating institutions to ensure quality and relevance. Oversee the direction of the graduate medical education program sponsored by the Department and ensure compliance with the standards of the Medical School, appropriate specialty boards and accreditation agencies. Oversee the Program Directors of the education programs. Promote and maintain excellence and integrity in patient care and research while continuing to enhance the quality of training, preparing trainees to work effectively as part of an integrated system of care.
Qualifications: Candidates must possess excellent leadership and negotiating skills, financial acumen and a strategic vision to provide future direction to this preeminent multi-faceted department. The successful applicant will hold an M.D., or M.D., Ph.D. or other degrees from an accredited institution and be board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, also called physiatry. Candidate must qualify for unrestricted license in Michigan.
