The Senior Unix System Engineer plays a key role in implementing, automating, orchestrating, and maintenance of computing solutions for existing, and/or newly developed applications and services for various research computing projects, as well as for central IT projects and services. The incumbent will serve as the point person for IT security compliance issues for the Lamont Campus, and works within the computing support group to enhance system and network operational needs across the Palisades, NY campus.
Deploy and enhance research computing systems and infrastructure through automation, virtualization, orchestration, and high availability tools. Assist in building-out centrally hyper converged computing infrastructures, as well as data loss protection solutions on-premises, or deploying within the cloud architecture. Ensure security, scalability, performance, and reliability of the deployed platforms. 65%
Develop and update standard operating procedures for computing infrastructure, as well as access and security safeguards on the Lamont Campus. Provide guidance and knowledge for research projects to perform access and security risk base analysis of their computing system and data protection procedures. 30%
Provide on-going documentation for all configuration and installation work being done, and provide regular feedback for any lack of resources, and/or knowledge gaps that prevents completion of assigned tasks. 5%
Will report to Senior Staff Associate/ Director of Research Computing and Campus Infrastructure. Will work closely with scientists serving as the project lead on specific projects. Mentoring junior staff on details of the system setup, and maintenance tasks is expected.
Will have an advisory role in the budget process for Lamont research computing, and central services projects, hardware acquisition, and cloud service financial management.
Bachelor's degree required in Computer Science or related field.
Minimum 4-6 years of related professional experience required.
Experienced in installing, configuring, and maintaining operating systems in a Unix environment, Preferred RedHat or CentOS Linux, and preferred RedHat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) experience required.
Experience in troubleshooting Linux server, and operating system issues in a heterogeneous networked computing environment required.
Knowledge of managing Hyper Converged Infrastructure for compute servers, data servers, data storage devices, and software deployment with automation and orchestration tools required.
Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse user communities including highly skilled programmers, scientists, administrators, vendors, students, support staff, and excellent written and spoken English required.
Proven attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects while functioning on a team required.
Relevant advanced degree desirable.
Prior experience in scientific data acquisition, analysis and visualization techniques a plus.
