To coordinate and provide specialized genetic counseling services for our pediatric patient populations within the Division of Pediatric Genetics, Metabolism and Genomic Medicine. Clinic locations include C&W as well as various outreach sites.
Provide genetic counseling services in line with ACGC Practice Based Competencies and NSGC Code of Ethics.
Work within a team of genetic counselors and medical geneticists. Triage patient referrals per divisional triage protocols to assign urgency of appointment and scheduling
Obtain, evaluate, and discuss individual, family and medical histories to determine the risk for genetic or medical conditions
Identify and coordinate appropriate genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies for genetic assessment
Explain and follow up genetic test results, inheritance, management, and follow up recommendations; communicate with physicians and disseminate medical plans and recommendations as directed by attending geneticists
Evaluate patient and/or family responses and emotions in order to provide anticipatory guidance and psychosocial counseling and support
Provide written documentation of genetic, medical, and counseling information for families and their health care professionals
Participateas a team memberin weekly patienttreatment conferences
May train andclinically supervise graduategenetic counseling students and other trainees within the healthcare system.
May contribute to genetic orrelated researchprojectsbyassisting in project development, data analysis, and manuscript preparation for publication and or presentation.
May initiate,develop,and recommendchangesto policies, procedures,and patientcare activities within the department
Master’s degree from a genetic counseling program accredited by the Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling or equivalent program.
Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
Competent with clinical experience
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as a member of our team.
Effective time management skills, attention to detail and ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with good judgment.
Non-Certified Genetic Counselor:
Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics within 18 months of starting the position
Experience with Epic, MiChart, and other UM clinical applications
Reasonable knowledge of University Hospital policies and procedures
Evidence of qualifications is provided by previous employment, references, performance evaluations, and personal interview.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
