Orthopedic Surgery – Assistant/Associate Professor
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System or Health Programs Faculty Appointment System (HP) position in Orthopedic Surgery. Tenure system appointments typically have 60% or more of assignable time devoted to research and scholarship, with another 40% devoted to clinical instruction and patient care services. HP appointments are unique to Michigan State University Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing and were created to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services, and clinical research. HP faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% clinical assignments devoted to clinical instruction and patient care services. In addition, HP faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. Both appointment types are expected to contribute to preclinical teaching and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. The HP position is a multi-year renewable appointment. We are looking to fill multiple positions, either appointment type is available at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be integral to the continuing excellence of veterinary orthopedics at Michigan State University and will join an existing team of two full-time orthopedic faculty. The orthopedic service supports an all-inclusive array of orthopedic activities ranging from standard elective procedures, to a unique, comprehensive total joint replacement program including elbow, hip, knee and ankle. Our activity in traumatology covers all aspects of conventional fixation techniques. We also offer an advanced minimally invasive and pediatric osteosynthesis program supported by 3 intra-operative fluoroscopy units and a comprehensive array of implants and their dedicated instrumentations. Our orthopedic equipment includes conventional plates and ESFs as well as a variety of locking plates and interlocking nails. Advanced digital preoperative planning and 3D printing are available within the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC provides outstanding, dedicated veterinary technician support and superb facilities including in excess of 30 examination rooms, 12 operating suites (three exclusively devoted to orthopedics), an intensive/critical care unit, a nursing unit, a complete diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy facility, video endoscopy, dentistry, and wound management suites as well as a physical rehabilitation center. Our busy orthopedic activity is complemented by state-of-the-art imaging modalities including on-site 16 slice helical CT scanner, 1.5 Tesla MRI, nuclear scintigraphy and ultrasound. Collaborative research opportunities are available through the long established, privileged relationship our orthopedic team enjoys with the College of Engineering. Internal funding opportunities are readily available through various foundations. Shared research space is available with other members of the orthopedic team including a gait analysis laboratory and biomechanical testing facilities. Our extensive, well-established program of funded research encompasses both clinical and applied basic science foci. Areas of specific emphasis includes minimally invasive as well as pediatric osteosnthesis, implant design and development, refinement of novel surgical techniques, feline orthopedics, total joint replacement, joint and fracture repair biomechanics and robotics. Strong mentoring in clinics and research will be available to the successful candidate.
Doctorate -Veterinary Medicine
Applicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan (limited academic licensure is available). The appointment requires board certification, or eligibility for certification, by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Preference will be given to board certified individuals with an advanced research degree as well as advanced training in orthopedic research. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff. Outstanding clinical service and surgical skills in veterinary orthopedics, outreach, consultation and case management, are also expected.
Applicants interested in the tenure system appointment should have a track record of training and experience as hypothesis-based scientists, preferably with evidence of independence to include extramural funding.
