Michigan State University invites applications for a fixed-term, full-time, one-year Chemistry Lab Academic Specialist position in Lyman Briggs College (LBC), an undergraduate science and liberal arts community (http://lbc.msu.edu). We are searching for a creative and pedagogically oriented individual to join the LBC Chemistry group to fill this temporary position with potential for one-year renewal.
This position requires a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates and active learning pedagogical techniques. The position offers exciting opportunities for candidates interested in teaching in a small, liberal-arts college environment with all of the resources provided by a large “Big 10” research university. Founded in 1967, LBC is a vibrant undergraduate, residential, liberal arts college at MSU focusing on the study of science and society. The LBC curriculum integrates natural sciences and mathematics courses with courses in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science.
Duties: Teach a 6-course load equivalent divided over the fall and spring semester of Lyman Briggs Chemistry labs, including evening labs, as part of a collaborative teaching team which includes faculty and undergraduate learning assistants. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students and report directly to the Dean. Participate in laboratory curriculum development with current chemistry faculty. Supervise undergraduate learning assistant including running weekly training meetings and providing feedback on their performance.
A master’s degree in chemistry and relevant teaching experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding teaching and mentoring skills, strong content knowledge, excellent writing skills and the ability to work with undergraduate students, faculty and staff in a collaborative environment.
Experience with laboratory curricula, teaching assistant supervision, and preparation of materials for large laboratory classes is preferred. Demonstrated interest in laboratory development and experience teaching a large enrollment course in a collaborative environment with other faculty and teaching assistants are desirable.
