The School of Health Sciences (SHS) at Oakland University (OU) in Rochester, Michigan invites qualified persons to apply for the position of founding Director of the Physician Assistant Program. This is an exciting opportunity for a visionary, collaborative, and energetic leader to develop, launch, and successfully earn accreditation status for our exciting new Master of Science in Physician Assistant Program. This is a 12-month, academic administrator position with a teaching requirement. Academic rank and tenure are dependent upon qualifications.
The Physician Assistant (PA) program will reside in the Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences (CDS) Department. One of four departments in SHS, the CDS department, serving the sciences of clinical determination, is ideally prepared to launch and support the PA program through robust undergraduate programming in histotechnology, medical laboratory science, nuclear medicine, radiologic technology, and a pre-clinical professions option. In collaboration with other OU health/medical programs, and the broad resources of the university, the department provides students with strong academic foundations in the natural and clinical sciences, and this includes opportunities for interprofessional education and leadership experiences.
The Director of the PA program will receive guidance and support from the Chair of CDS and the Office of the Dean. The Director of the PA program shall provide effective leadership:
Formationally: – Leading curriculum development, assessment/mapping and revision, and the development of clinical sites – Overseeing recruitment of all PA personnel including the medical director, clinical director, staff support, and principal and instructional faculty – Planning and managing program budgets and resource needs – Leading and maintaining strategic planning with continuous refinement – Initiating pursuit of accreditation and compliance with Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
Administratively: – Overseeing student admissions process (through CASPA) and collaborating with the Office of Admissions on admissions policies, recruitment of students – Maintaining vibrant marketing and communications of the PA program – Managing primary operations including budgeting and enrollment – Managing all personnel, responsive to faculty and staff employment contracts – Leading accreditation and compliance cycles with ARC-PA – Directing and preparing program outcome information and reports as needed – Developing and maintaining collaborative clinical and community partnerships, including alumni and developmental relations. – Serving collaboratively as a key member of the CDS and SHS leadership teams
Pedagogically: – Leading and inspiring faculty, student, and community engagement in classroom, laboratory, clinical and interprofessional education – Overseeing student advisement, advancement and remediation – Leading curricular revision, and continuous pursuit of educational best practices
Skills Needed: – Strong interpersonal ability, time management, and self-motivation – Demonstrated success working with diverse populations – Strong leadership, organization, budget development, communication, and technology literacy
Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree relevant to graduate health/medical education, a demonstrated record of scholarly pursuits and accomplishments, previous ARC-PA accreditation experience, previous experience in PA education leadership role (e.g. Director, Coordinator), HLC or other regional accreditation knowledge and experience.
Minimum requirements for the position of Director include: attainment of a Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant from an ARC-PA accredited program, or MD/DO; minimum of five years of experience in a clinical practice setting; at least two years higher education experience in a Physician Assistant Master’s program. Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) with current NCCPA certification, or as an MD/DO eligible for licensure as an allopathic or osteopathic physician with certification from an ABMS or AOA approved specialty board.
