The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) at Michigan State University announces an available Research Associate (postdoctoral) Fixed-Term position for research and capacity building as part of its anticipated Mozambique-related activities under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy Research, Capacity, and Influence (PRCI). The anticipated position is available starting on or about April 1, 2021. Initial funding would be for two years, with extension possible based on funding and performance. The Research Associate will likely be based in East Lansing, Michigan (MSU campus) though outposting to Mozambique may also be possible.
PRCI’s approach emphasizes local capacity building through collaborative research and training. AFRE’s research and capacity building in Mozambique will provide civil society, donors and government officials with guidance on how to improve food and nutrition security, enable rural livelihoods to become more resilient to climate shocks, and support Mozambique’s journey to self-reliance by building research and policy analysis capacity related to agriculture and food systems development.
The Research Associate is expected to work closely with on-campus faculty and in-country staff.

Doctorate -Agricultural economics, development econmics
Ph.D. in agricultural economics, development economics, or related field
Experience in international development research and outreach, with a strong preference for those with in-country experience, whether extensive short-term or living overseas
Extensive experience in the use of Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) data and other household data sets
Capability to understand and communicate in Portuguese; Spanish capability will also be considered
Excellent communication and academic writing skills
Ability to work independently but also as a team player
A strong work ethic and dedication to high quality research
Willingness to extend the period of your assignment and reside in Mozambique if funding and project priorities permit
Strong commitment to working with local counterparts and building their skills
