Responsible for ensuring the completion of research projects within the Core Facility in a timely and efficient manner. Provides services and consultation to researchers and investigators, and facilitates highly technical and specialized scientific research. Guides the Core in relevant areas to ensure consistent, high quality service for the research community.
Please note:Candidate must be able to adapt to fast paced environment where schedules are based on the academic, granting and research calendars and unexpected issues will frequently arise due to the nature of research and the fact that students are learning both project planning and time management skills. Job may require lifting items greater than 50 pounds and moving cryogen tanks weighing >700 pounds (on wheels).
Maintains clear and accurate documentation of the protocols, instrumentation logs, and/or data collected.
Records work accurately and completely.
Assists with administrative duties necessary for a fee-for-service facility operation such as collecting and/ or entering facility billing data.
Utilizes established safety practices, and is responsible for providing a safe work environment for fellow employees and clients.
Demonstrates a sound, working knowledge of techniques in other laboratories in order to provide cross-over assistance to clients.
Assists in the organization of in-house and/ or off-site training.
Performs literature reviews for the purposes of furthering the research.
May contribute data analysis for researchers, using specialized software in a form useful for further statically analysis or publications.
Assists in the development of new analysis techniques and methodologies.
Applies relevant science to Core technologies and applications.
Utilizes advances knowledge of applications, principles, theories, and concepts to design and troubleshoot projects for the research community.
Troubleshoots problems with procedures and equipment, and suggests adjustments to protocols.
Works on advanced problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
Exercises judgement within defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques.
Trains Core staff and clients in advanced instrument operation and applications.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
2 years of relevant domain expertise
4 years of analytical laboratory technical or other relevant experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
• Ability to develop and maintain a variety of analytical methods • Train new users on typical analytical instrumentation in the core facility (NMR, Crystallography, MS, Optical etc.) • Support advanced undergraduate education instrumental analysis chemistry labs. • Experience using chemicals, including organic solvents, strong acids and bases. • Effective oral and written communication skills • Must be able to operate and maintain common laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, sonicater, vortexer, analytical balances, pipets) • Proficient in appropriate lab notebook keeping and documentation procedures and/or quality control steps and procedures • Computer proficiency • Ability to work in a cross-functional collaborative team Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelors, M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biology • Past experience in an academic lab or in a regulated lab environment. • Hands-on experience with the following preferred techniques (listed in order of desire): TGA/DTA/DSC, NMR (liquid and solid state), powder and/or single crystal diffraction, GC-MS, LC-MS, MALDI, FTIR, polarimeter, X-Ray Fluorescence, UV/Vis”
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities):
• Experience with Unix and Windows based systems • Experience and/or proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe products, and basic proficiency to work in a highly networked environment • Historical customer service experience
