Chief Clinical Officer – University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG) Percent Effort: 70%
Basic Function and Responsibilities
The Chief Clinical Officer for University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG) reports to the Executive Director of the University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG), and partners with the Chief Operating Officer for University of Michigan Medical Group (COO UMMG) and the Chief Nursing Officer for UMMG (CNO UMMG) for overall performance and management of the UMMG. This physician will be appointed by the Executive Director of the UMMG.
The primary responsibility for this senior level management position is to provide clinical operational leadership related to all clinical processes, systems and practices focused on improving safety, quality, timeliness, financial stewardship and people in UMMG. The CCO UMMG will coordinate these activities with the overall UMHS safety and quality priorities. The CCO UMMG will guide management of patient services and physician leadership for patient access, care and process improvement.

Has a direct reporting relationship to the Executive Director of the University of Michigan Medical Group
Acts as liaison with UMMG physician leaders to identify, resolve and appropriately communicate safety, quality and care delivery issues
Partners with the COO UMMG and the CNO UMMG, and collaborates with the Associate Chief Clinical Officers, Ambulatory Care Clinical Chiefs, Associate Medical Directors and other UMMG leadership to effectively execute the UMMG strategic priorities.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Recruit, select, evaluate and provide leadership for Associate Chief Clinical Officers, Ambulatory Care Clinical Chiefs, Associate Medical Directors and other UMMG leadership. Foster opportunities for continued professional growth and development
Fulfills duties assigned by the Executive Director of the UMMG
Attends key leadership meetings for UMMG and as delegated by the Executive Director of the UMMG
In close collaboration with the CNO UMMG and COO UMMG, guides management of patient access, including developing systems to facilitate scheduling, provision of in-person and virtual care, and provider services for best patient-care outcomes
Program & Clinical Management
Provides leadership with the CCO UMMG and CNO UMMG in all programmatic improvements and capacity expansions
Resolves clinical and operational problems of assigned areas consulting with administrators, nursing leaders, ambulatory service leads and patient care staff utilizing an interest-based problem-solving approach
In partnership with the COO UMMG and CNO UMMG, actively leads quality and patient care initiatives and improvements that support organizational priorities, including effectively supervising physician and nurse managers to accomplish designated outcomes in patient care, safety and quality.
Actively represents and leads physician focus on safety, quality, timeliness, financial stewardship and people through:
Ambulatory care unit (ACU) workflows
Practitioner compliance with operational procedures, rules and regulations
Provides input on physician workforce planning, allocation of space, and fiscal and material resources
Shares decision-making and accountability with COO UMMG and CNO UMMG on determining priorities for capital and operational budgets of assigned clinical/programmatic areas
Participates on planning teams to determine and implement improvements in ambulatory facilities, including construction, renovation or leasing of structures and purchase of major equipment
Utilizes a data-based approach and facilitates innovation and creativity in the development of new initiatives to support ongoing performance improvement and organizational change
Actively participates as a member of the UMMG executive team in strategic planning, policy formulation, programmatic development, facility planning, problem-solving, quality and cost improvement initiatives and the implementation of patient and family-centered care.
Actively engages and supports team building and effective teamwork within UMMG and institutional teams.
Works closely with the CCO UMMG and CNO UMMG to improve the quality of the patient experience in UMMG
Directs and leads multiple complex work streams
Works collaboratively in a team environment, continually addressing ongoing and new issues, while also exercising appropriate autonomy when needed to meet job requirements
Works alongside the CNO UMMG and other allied health professions across domains with management, staff and clinicians, requiring the development of rapport and the maintenance of professional relationships. Internal contacts include all levels of management and staff
Actively participates in training and seminars related to relevant professional and/or leadership development opportunities
Eligible for a faculty appointment in the University of Michigan Medical School
Active Medical Staff Member
Progressively responsible experience in the leadership and management of health care delivery and a history of successful execution of initiatives
Progressively responsible administrative experience in programmatic strategic planning, implementation and evaluation within a complex academic medical center environment
Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with nursing partners, individuals and/or teams, across disciplines
Considerable knowledge of management principles, practices and methods
Performance Evaluation To be determined, based on identification of the CCO’s assessment metrics.
Compensation To be determined, based on candidate’s qualifications and appropriate benchmarks
