The Department of Psychiatry within the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, energetic, highly motivated, and organized individual to join a growing research and program development team with the TRAILS Program (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students) as a Program Evaluation Specialist. The mission of TRAILS (https://trailstowellness.org/) is to provide more equitable and improved access to evidence-based mental health services for all students. TRAILS partners with a wide variety of community stakeholders to build capacity within K-12 schools so that their students affected by mental illnesses and mental health challenges are best supported. TRAILS provides clinical resources, training, and implementation support to educators and school or community mental health professionals with the aim of improving student health and social and educational outcomes and promoting health and healthcare equity. TRAILS has a particular focus on partnering with under-resourced communities with elevated Medicaid enrollment. Current major initiatives are centered in Michigan, Colorado, and Massachusetts.
The Program Evaluation Specialist will work with the TRAILS team, school leaders, and other partners to accurately and efficiently carry out a range of program evaluation and data analyses tasks for the TRAILS program, focusing on TRAILS expansion into three (3) rural school districts in the State of Colorado. The Program Evaluation Specialist will assist with survey and other instrument development, management of IRB application and approval processes, data collection activities, and data analysis, interpretation, and report writing. They will help coordinate the day-to-day implementation and evaluation activities of the project in collaboration with the project team, the Youth Policy Lab, and the Colorado Evaluation and Action Lab, as well as other potential project partners.

Representing TRAILS with a high degree of professionalism and integrity, the Program Evaluation Specialist will support the TRAILS Colorado expansion project with excellent communication, teamwork, inclusiveness, and relationship-building as the foundation of all interactions. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Perform statistical analyses using TRAILS datasets and/or publicly available datasets related to multidisciplinary research involving mental health services, social science (e.g., education), and population health data independently, as well as, in collaboration with other project partners
Synthesize multilevel outcomes (e.g., health outcomes, cost, service utilization) from TRAILS datasets and/or publicly funded large datasets
Responsible for the development, application, and maintenance of evaluation of TRAILS program(s) and the related data collection, management and reporting protocols
Independently construct new, large-scale, complex databases, designing their formats and structures and managing their reorganization for specific analytic purposes
Construct variables and measures from new and existing data sets using appropriate techniques for specific analytic purposes
Develop and maintain documentation for new and existing databases (e.g., measures, sources, construction, programs) and archival documentation for completed projects
Maintain datasets including merging files, restructuring and recoding variables, and checking for errors
Work with the TRAILS team to strategically plan what data needs to be collected that provides data-driven improvements for the program, how data should be tracked to monitor outcomes, what data needs to be prioritized in order to reduce data collection burden while maximizing value for our community partners
Advise TRAILS leadership on statistical analyses, data reduction, and study design
Advise TRAILS web team on the collection of user data and analyzing program reach, materials, and utilization
Prepare and write data and analysis sections of working papers, interim reports, final reports, and manuscripts for submission
Attend regular meetings with project investigators to discuss progress, and preparing presentations of study findings
Master’s degree in Statistics, Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services), Informatics, Social Sciences, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
A minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated experienced in managing and preparing data for analysis
A minimum of three (3) years of proficient experience with data analysis using bivariate and univariate descriptive techniques; analysis of variance; multiple regression, including for categorical and count outcomes; and must be familiar with the statistical assumptions underlying these methods
Proficient in writing statistical methods and results with the quality necessary for manuscript preparation
Experience preparing graphs, figures, and illustrations of the results of statistical analyses
Competent with Excel and able to import data from Excel and related databases into SAS, R, Stata, and other software systems
Exhibit a solid foundation in statistical theory and application, and a willingness to learn and apply new methods and approaches
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; exhibits exceptional ability to independently prepare correspondence (especially with e-mail messages) and write/edit/produce reports;
Ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team, and independently in a dynamic environment with multiple competing priorities
Highly motivated, organized, and autonomous person with a professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills
PhD in Statistics, Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services), Informatics, Social Sciences, or related field and/or;
A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience working with teams implementing school-based and/or community mental health programs in real-world settings and/or;
A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience leading and executing evaluation design for a program, organization, or other group
Proficient technical writing skills for documenting database structure and content as well as writing data collection and analysis protocols
Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
This is not a remote position, however, due to COVID-19, the responsibilities of this role will be performed remotely until notified.
The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate’s education and experience. The salary range for this position is minimum $61,830; midpoint $80,380; and maximum is $98,930
