Under the leadership of and reporting directly to the Associate Director for Global Engagement and in collaboration with the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) Manager, the International Education Program Specialist promotes international student learning and development across the UM-Flint campus. You will provide a support system to facilitate the acculturation process for F-1 and J-1 international students coming directly from abroad. The International Education Program Specialist develops and implements international student clubs and activities; orientation programs and customized workshops to encourage student involvement and support recruitment and retention plans. You will work with other departments of the university and community resources to meet the needs of the international student population. You will provide functional coordination over work assignments designed to engage international students in the UM-Flint community and support their overall success from admission through graduation and beyond. You will design and coordinate the Faculty & Staff International Student Mentorship Program, the Intercultural Leadership Seminar, new international student orientations, the Global Learning Community, the Conversation Partner Program, and cultural programming to involve students in the UM-Flint campus and broader Flint community. You will serve as a DSO and ARO to support international student admissions and international student services to ensure continuity in student engagement and services. The International Education Program Specialist supports the UM-Flint internationalization strategy, led and facilitated by the Center for Global Engagement (CGE), by providing innovative leadership to develop, implement, manage, and market a diverse range of all UM-Flint international student programs and activities that increase overall intercultural learning and academic achievement. Program Coordination Provide large-group and special group information sessions; support a diverse, growing international student population in participating in and using university resources to achieve academic success, interpersonal growth, and career readiness; implement programs to improve international student engagement and involvement in the campus community. International Student Admissions Serve as DSO and ARO to support international student admissions; support international student application processing, assist prospective students through the application process; provide large-group and special group pre-departure orientation sessions. Outreach Develop, plan, and promote international education activities, including International Education Week events, New International Student Orientations, International Food Show, Education Abroad Pre-Departure Orientations, Intercultural Leadership Seminar, etc.; prepare promotional materials; coordinate with campus departments to develop and distribute tailored marketing materials and promotional activities; provide regular information sessions; manage social media; develop media content; develop innovative recruitment and outreach strategies to reach international student groups. International Alumni Relations Support In collaboration with International Student Recruitment, identify and engage with international alumni to develop a network to serve as ambassadors of UM-Flint and identify and attract applicants, serve as mentors, career counselors, and conveyors of values to other alumni, and to prospective and current students locally or at a distance. Academic Success Liaison Advocate for, educate, and serve the campus community to increase and improve intercultural competence; assist faculty, staff, and students in their support of the international student population in their transition to, retention at, and graduation from UM-Flint; act as a confidante and liaison providing interculturally appropriate advice and guidance as necessary; promote cultural interaction between international students, underrepresented students, and U.S. student at UM-Flint and the surrounding communities.
A consistent hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) is available for this position at this time.
